How to get around Florence without stress: a guide to alternative transportation

Florence is a wonderful city, rich in history, art and nooks and crannies to discover. But let’s face it: getting around the historic center can be complicated, especially for first-time visitors. Between limited traffic zones (ZTLs), hard-to-find parking spots, and public transportation that is not always intuitive, organizing your commute can become a bit of a nightmare. But don’t worry: in this guide I show you all the alternatives available for getting around Florence without stress, with a special focus on the most comfortable, flexible solutions suitable for different types of travelers.

1. Public transportation: buses and streetcars

If you are a traveler who likes to explore cities independently, public transportation may be a good option. In Florence, public transportation is operated by ATAF (buses) and GEST (tramway).

Bus

Buses cover virtually the entire city and outlying areas. However, the historic center is often congested and many lines divert to avoid the LTZ.

  • Tickets: can be purchased at newsstands, tobacconists, at main stops, or via app (Tabnet, Dropticket, etc.)
  • Cost: about €1.50 per ride valid for 90 minutes

Tramway

Currently there are three lines (T1, T2, T3) and more are under construction. T2 directly connects Amerigo Vespucci Airport to downtown in about 20 minutes.

  • Advantages: on time, fast, little subject to traffic
  • Disadvantages: covers only a few routes, so it is not suitable for all needs

2. Cab

Cabs in Florence work well, but with some limitations:

  • They do not stop on the street: they must be booked via app (It Taxi, AppTaxi), phone, or found at designated stations
  • Costs: higher, especially during evening or holiday hours
  • ZTL: can enter the ZTL, but at times of heavy traffic there may be delays

They are ideal for short distances and situations where you need immediate transportation, but they are not always the cheapest or most convenient choice for a full day of exploring.

3. Car sharing and scooter sharing

For the more adventurous, Florence offers various car sharing services (e.g. Enjoy) and electric scooters (e.g. ZigZag, MiMoto). All it takes is an app, a valid driver’s license and a credit card.

  • Pros: complete autonomy, freedom in travel, good for those who already know the city
  • Cons: ZTL to be avoided, parking lots hard to find, can be stressful for tourists

4. Electric bicycles and scooters

In recent years, sustainable mobility has also grown in Florence. You will find numerous bike sharing services (Mobike, RideMovi) and electric scooters (Lime, Bird, Dott).

  • Good for: getting around the old town quietly, stopping often, avoiding traffic
  • Beware of: slippery cobblestones, bike lanes not always well marked, obeying traffic rules

5. Walking (and enjoying the city on foot)

Florence is a city designed to be experienced on foot. The historic center is relatively small, flat and full of wonderful sights. Walking often remains the most pleasant and effective way to explore the main attractions.

  • Distances: from the Duomo to Ponte Vecchio are 5-10 minutes
  • Tips: comfortable shoes, water bottle, Google Maps or an offline map

6. NCC (Car rental with driver): the worry-free solution

We come to the lesser-known but often more effective protagonist: the NCC, or Noleggio Con Conducente. Unlike the cab, the NCC must be booked in advance and offers a more exclusive and personalized service.

Why choose a NCC in Florence?

  • ZTL access: can enter and park even in the heart of the historic center
  • Convenience: you are picked up and dropped off wherever you like, without having to worry about parking
  • Flexibility: customized itineraries, tailored schedules, no meters
  • Comfort: spacious, stylish, air-conditioned cars, professional driver

When does it really pay off?

  • You have little time and want to visit the most without stress
  • Travel with luggage (e.g., arrival or departure from airport/station)
  • You are in company (family, colleagues, groups of friends)
  • Do you want to go on excursions outside the city (Chianti, Pisa, Siena, etc.)?

7. Conclusion: which medium to choose?

It all depends on you, your needs and your travel style. Here is a small summary table:

RequirementBest option
Short trips in the centerWalking / Scooter
From the airport to downtownTramway / NCC
Excursion outside FlorenceNCC
Avoiding traffic/relaxationNCC / Tramway
Maximum autonomyCar Sharing / Scooter Sharing
Limited budgetPublic transportation

Florence offers many alternatives, but the key is to choose the right vehicle at the right time. If you want to avoid complications, especially with suitcases, tight schedules or out-of-town destinations, NCC proves to be one of the most convenient and intelligent solutions.

Whatever your choice, Florence will know how to welcome you with its beauty. Enjoy your trip!
